Homecoming is a tradition that has existed for years, usually consisting of a football game and a dance. For Freshmen, Homecoming is a fun and new experience open to them as they arrive at the high school. Making an exciting impression is everything, and wanting students to return in their future high school years is everything.
One student in attendance that was interviewed was Angie Serrano, grade 9. She is very big into theater and is enrolled in chorus. When asked about how much fun she had at her first Homecoming, Serrano said,”Pretty decent, I actually talked to some people tonight.”
Another standout part of Homecoming was the decorations put up by the LHS Student Council. Serrano was also asked what she thought of the homecoming dance’s theme: disco. “It’s fun, they did really well with the decorations,” said Serrano.
Additionally, this year’s homecoming dance was hosted on September 27. But is it too early to be asking about homecoming for the next year? Juliette Hutchison, grade 9, was asked about what she would suggest for next year’s homecoming theme. “La-La-Land. It’s a real classic and it’s a fun thing with decorations and what to wear,” said Hutchison. Not everything is perfect, is it? Everything can be changed and improved, and Hutchison was asked what she personally would change about the homecoming dance. “… water instead of other drinks. A little bit more space in the dancing area, they could shove the tables over a bit,” stated Hutchison. The dance was held in the high school cafeteria, which is currently smaller than last year due to ongoing construction. In spite of construction, the turnout, as always, was significant.
In short, why would a freshman go to the homecoming dance? It is a new and unfamiliar experience, so why take such a risk? Alex Lightfoot, grade 9, was asked what he enjoyed about his first homecoming experience. “Hanging out with my girlfriend and her friends. Meeting new people and making connections,” stated Lightfoot. Homecoming is an event that can push people out of their comfort zone and allow them to form bonds that one might not expect to make. There’s always a social event around the corner that might push even the quietest people to let loose and actually have some fun.
Homecoming dances will always be a new experience for freshmen, and homecoming dances should always be a welcoming experience for freshmen. Homecoming 2025 has passed, and while some may have critiques, this year’s freshman class enjoyed their time to go grab something sparkly and dress up to dance the night away at the disco. Hopefully the same can be said for next year’s freshman class.
